How much does a retaining wall cost in Pittsburgh?

Two local contractors publish useful starting references, but they are not a market average or a quote for your property. Dirt Works lists $40–$100+ per square foot of wall face. Steel City Landscape lists a starting price of $65 per square foot. Replacement demolition, access, drainage and engineering must be checked against the written scope.

What is a square foot of wall face?

For a simple rectangular face, length multiplied by exposed height gives its face area. For example, 30 feet × 4 feet = 120 square feet. This is a quantity check, not a design calculation. Ask how the quote handles buried courses, changing height, returns and multiple tiers.

Start with the dimensions

Ask each contractor to describe the same wall location, length and height, and to state how height was measured. A square foot of wall face is different from a square foot of yard. Terraces and varying heights need a clear description.

Separate the major parts

Compare removal and disposal, excavation and base preparation, the wall system, drainage, backfill, access, engineering and permits. Ask what is included in restoring lawns, driveways or nearby steps.

Keep allowances visible

A quote may include estimated allowances rather than fixed amounts for particular work. Ask which costs can change, who approves changes and how those changes will be priced. Do not compare a complete proposal with a low total that leaves major items unpriced.

Use your own quotes

The advertised examples above do not establish a local average or an instant project price. Site conditions and the written scope need to be understood first. Use the worksheet to compare actual proposals.
